My name is Kaitlin Baker, I’m a designer and illustrator located in Portland OR. While working at Nike fulltime is one of the most fortunate places I could end up as a designer, there are times I seek to escape the boundaries of the brand and look to build something unique to my own vision and needs. When Terry and I spoke together about art and how it’s impacted our separate journeys, this idea of self-expression was something that always came up as the most important aspect of creating work.
This project with Exchange Program was finally a way for me to both fulfill the need for that creative expression while also providing an escape from the doom and gloom of the last two years, and yet at the same time confront it in a way through the use of humor and various juxtaposing themes and motifs. In partnering with the Exchange Program we were able to come together and meet the hardness of the world with an unconventional offering of post-apocalyptic puppies and an extension of a most basic human need: warmth. Through the use of a blanket as the canvas we are standing for this dual symbolism of both bold strength and the appeal of softness. This juxtaposition is a representation of our society as it slowly begins to realize the shift of power from a rigid toughness to compassionate tranquility through a pursuit of mental well-being both of self and community. Through this collaboration we seek to provide both literally the blanket to provide the warmth and security we all seek but also the awareness that tenderness can hold power.
