My name is Mark McGinnis, I am the Creative Director for The Incorporated Clothing. I was born in Seattle and have been creating things ever since I got my hands on some crayons and Play-Doh. Whether doodling in class or making short films with my friends after school, I was always trying to make something. In college, after years of obsessing over Kanye’s blog and The Hundreds, I started making t-shirts with a few friends. We called our brand “The Incorporated,” as an intersection of all of our varied interests and inspirations. After 5 years of existence as a side hustle, I quit my job at Adidas, moved home to my parents, started taking the brand seriously and released our first full collection. The rest is history!
We partnered with Exchange Program to make the RELEASE NERVOUS TENSION t-shirt. In both white & black (exclusive for Dover Street Market), this product brought together the worlds of The Incorporated & Exchange Program by interlocking our logos on the front and aligning our messages on the back. With a huge puff print we implore each wearer to release their tension, wherever it may live in their lives. Terry and I decided that this message should be loud and clear, so we pushed our printer to make the print as large as possible, even a little larger than possible so the print runs off of the edge of the shirt. In a super heavy puff ink, we want the viewer to feel the message as much as they see it, making an impression that ironically creates some tension, in order to release it.
It is easy to feel alone. In 2020, it was hard not to. A lot of times, we, as creatives, buy into this isolation and uncertainty. These feelings have been responsible for a lot of amazing art throughout the years. They allow us to explore the dark side, the tension, the unhappiness, to try to use those negative thoughts to create something positive. As the saying goes, “no person is an island.” However, for the average human in 2020, it was difficult to feel like anything but…. Through this collaboration, we wanted to bring some relief to our community of friends, family and fellow makers. The message was this:
R E L E A S E
F R O M
N E R V O U S
T E N S I O N .

That loneliness and stress can be great fuel for the creative fire, but without some relief, it can be equally as dangerous. We partnered with Exchange Program to remind you that you are not alone. Even if you’re stuck in your studio all day on Zoom calls, we’re there with you. If you’re not sure where the next paycheck is coming from or still waiting for that invoice to be paid, we’ve been there too. Times are always uncertain, life is usually no walk in the park, but this collaboration was a reminder that you’re not the only one going through it. Terry and I have spent a lot of time talking about what it means to be a creative, specifically, the difficulties that arise for young people with big plans and dreams for their art, but less money and support than they need to make it happen. There’s so many creatives in their room or at a cafe or at the desk of their 9 to 5 job who are trying everything they can to make it happen. This collaboration is for everyone, but definitely for those people. This shirt reminds us that we are all alone, together.
